Environmental Justice

We are a Presbyterian Church (USA) Earth Care congregation. We have pledged to care for all of God’s creation, to protect and restore the earth for future generations.

A vegetable garden in the middle of the church parking lot is planted and nurtured by volunteers to provide our food pantry with fresh produce in season.

The Central Food Pantry Garden utilizes plants and seeds from Kansas City Community Gardens. Ours is a no-till organic garden whose bounty is donated to support our food pantry ministry. Companion planting celebrates how biodiversity enhances growth and illustrates how sowing different crops together protects and supports individual plants.

Central partners with organizations that promote environmental justice. We are an affiliate of the Kansas City Community Gardens (KCCG) network, we have hosted an e-recycling event with Midwest Recycling Center, and our recent grant recipients Green Works in Kansas City, The Pilgrim Center, and ScrapsKC have demonstrated a commitment to earth care in the greater Kansas City area.

Our solar panel-covered roof has reduced our energy we use by 60% since 2019. We invested in updating our interior lighting, which included installing motion activated sensors in common areas and completely switching to LED bulbs. We program heating and cooling zones in the building for when they are occupied. Our outside water use is regulated through a smart irrigation system.
